Web Site Redesign - Input Wanted
on: November 25, 2006, 07:39:10 AM

Folks,

I've started working on the next incarnation of the House Marik website.  As such, there are sections I'm going to be adding, and others I'm probably going to remove.

Therefore, I feel it is my duty to ask you what you want to see included in the next version of the Web site.  Don't be shy, don't be hesitant, and don't be afraid.

This is YOUR chance to have something added to the main Web site.  So let your voice be heard!

"Good news!  I've decided not to KILL you!"
— Stewie, "Family Guy"

"But sir, I can't even turn on a woman!  How in the hell do you expect me to pilot a 'Mech?"
— Last words of an aspiring Lyran social-general

"The [Free Worlds] League is an acquired taste, but one indicative of a refined gaming palate.  It requires subtlety and imagination to play as a Leaguer.  It's no shame on them that they are so few in number; rather, shame on us."
— Neko Bijin

“Davion components. Capellan components. All same. Made in Free Worlds League!”
— Sergei Ivanovich, Chief Tech, Tooth of Ymir Mercenary Regiment

The main site, Horsethief, not the forum.  That has its OWN problems (mainly inactivity as of late).

A section dedicated to tactics for House Marik units.  Ideally, it could give suggestions on using their strengths and playing down weaknesses.  Maybe a page or two on how to defeat other factions (given that they stay with canon themes).

Maps too, and summaries of important FWL planets.

That's a start.  I was thinking of adding an image gallery and a downloads section as well.  I'm thinking of turning the site into a community resource rather than an information resource.  The main reason being that WK would probably be far friendlier to us if the site was a community resource since we wouldn't be providing info for free that we'd otherwise have to pay $40 to get from a copy of Handbook: House Marik.

Any other ideas?  I am concerned about how the menu will be structured.  Specifically the canon information.

Well what I think would be cool would be like a “ComStar News” box. Just a little  box with headlines (maybe scrolling) for important newsworthy stuff; new products, events, important topics in the forums, or any other news in the B’Tech community. Like the Safe Report, but more less bite-size samples of the latest news.
And for a little fun you can make some fun things now and then to add to the feel, like “Nirasaki Computers Collective – We compute!”

I also like the idea of information upon FWL planets. But on the other side WizKids already has this section/idea covered on their site for MW: Dark Ages (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/mechwarrior/linknet/interactivemap.asp).

It makes it hard fore me to think up of new things to add when your trying to make more of a community site, it is more less up the community members to supply resources and information upon the FWL and related topics than the publisher.

Let's think of this as a hybrid between a community and information site, ok?  There WILL be canon information on the site, like there is now, but not to the extent that the Clan Wolf Archives used to have (or will again, when I finish that one).  And it won't be the "community" site to the extent that sites like MySpace, Digg and TagWorld are, either.

I have been considering "Irian News Downloader" RSS feed reader (it would grab RSS feeds from other sites and display them as HTML) on the home page, but I'd need someone to add some color to the black and white image I have of the downloader.

Got any other ideas?  I"ll be posting a list of what's been suggested once I have enough suggestions.

I think the hybrid site would probally work best. Also a tie-in to the Wiki-style info site at Sarna.net would be good. Someone brought up the planetary guides like the WizKids site had, gleaning that info to me falls well within the hybrid concept.
Having member FWL groups posted with rosters, histories and the like would be a good addition. Trying to get that now with the 211th Strike Group. Along those lines, mercenaries are listed in the history, why not have an area where members can display their minis of merc units that were/are employed by the LCCC ?

The Wizkids CBT site is now kaput.  Sad
